For years, this legend added even more mystery surrounding the Windsors. Wallis's first husband, Lt. Comdr. Earl Winfield Spencer, Jr. can be called the "father" of the Birthplace of Naval Aviation. Spencer was sent in late 1917 to establish a new air base at North Island on the Coronado Peninsula. This is a brief article about Spencer's work as well as an overview of the history of the airbase. Photographs and article from the wonderful weekend at Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, October 2009. Featuring Society Members Featuring Hugo Vickers (UK), Dean James Leo (OH), Richard Rene Silvin (GA/FL), Lena Farugia (South Africa), J. Scott Watkins (MD). The weekend included a tour of North Island Air Base; tour of Wallis' homes in San Diego; a visit to the Society-sponsored Duke & Duchess of Windsor exhibition at the Coronado Library; a tour the Windsor Cottage on the grounds of the Hotel del Coronado with hotel historian Chris Donovan; A Windsor Gala evening which recreated the exact menu served to the Prince of Wales during his 1920 visit to San Diego. The 5-course gourmet meal was served in the same location where the Prince's banquet was held, The Coronet Room. The evening included a special one-act performance of Lena Farugia's play WE & Them (aka UNTITLED) by Lena and her husband, Robert Davies. Also a performance of select songs from a new WE musical Wallis & Edward: The Love Story of the Century by Irv Raible; Screening of the 2002 documentary byChristine Carter (Edward on Edward) titled The Demonized Duchess. An overnight excursion for several members to Long Beach to visit the Windsors Suite at the Hotel Queen Mary. |
| Society sponsors a two-month Duke & Duchess of Windsor exhibition at the Coronado Library (October-November 2009) |

Society Members contribute items to an exhibition at the Coronado Public Library which coincided with the Society's first conference in October. The exhibition include a comprehensive photo biography of the Windsors life, with a brief narrative. Additional focus on King Edward VIII abdication memorabilia, the two Sotheby's auctions of the Duchess Jewelry and their personal collection in 1987 and 1998 respectively. Numerous pieces of faux Wallis jewelry, items that were sold in the 1998 auction in New York. The exhibit was one of the most visited, according to the library's Director, Christian Esquiven. |
