Bibliography |
On this page is the Official Duke and Duchess of Windsor Society Bibliography of books, magazines, films, video, theatrical works, and other ephemera by or about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (also Britain's King Edward VIII, Edward, Prince of Wales, Mrs. Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, Mrs. Simpson).
The works reflected in this bibliography include nonfiction (biography, autobiography, memoirs, history, anthological history books, auction catalogues) works as well as fiction (novels, plays, etc).
This is the first edition of the Society’s official bibliography of books, films, magazines, ephemera, and other media that are by or about the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. The Duke and Duchess were probably two of the most discussed individuals in the twentieth century. For obvious reasons, not all books, magazines, or newspapers are included in this listing. The Windsors frequently appear in the memoirs of other notable individuals but, at least for now, those works are not included in this bibliography (the exception to this rule is if the memoirs were written by former staff members of the couple). The intention of this bibliography is to provide interested readers, researchers, and historians with a comprehensive listing of works whose primary contents deals with the Duke and/or Duchess of Windsor (throughout their lifetimes).
This bibliography is intended to be a continuously evolving work in progress which is primarily Society member driven. We will eventually expand the magazine section to include more titles that have a substantial amount of material related to the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. For obvious reasons, we would not want to list every LIFE Magazine that included a photo of the Duke & Duchess and a short caption. Such a listing would confuse users of this bibliography with too many listings. The same could be said for newspaper articles. For this reason, we request that you use the above criteria before you decide to submit additional recommendations of books, magazine issues or other media (please submit! to your hearts content...I just don’t want to create a lot of additional work for India or me by having to sort through large lists of material. If we all keep in mind the intent of the bibliography then it should be fairly easy to maintain a reasonable size of content and thus user friendly.)
A number of the books may have appeared in print multiple times and with different publishers. With one exception, we have elected to refrain from including that information for now (although works by the Windsors will eventually include as many printings/publishers as we can possibly obtain). There is currently not any mention of foreign language publications.
NOTES FROM THE BIBLIOGRAPHER
A few helpful notes from Society Member India Edghill (NY), the author of this bibliography:
- For titles starting with “A” or “The”, I’m putting that first, rather than an endless series of titles that read TITLE, THE. However, the alphabetization is by the first significant word in the title. I’m using strict library alphabetization. In many cases, there are different publishing dates for the same book – for instance, it came out in the UK in 1989 but in the USA in 1990. We’d go mad trying to get them all in. The title and author are the most important things. Sometimes the titles change: EDWARD VIII by Hector Bolitho became KING EDWARD VIII by Hector Bolitho later.
- When the Duke or Duchess is the author, I use the form of their name on the book in question.
- I’m not using “a novel” after fiction titles, as it’s not really a subtitle, more a marketing tool.
- In general, biographies of other royal family members are not included in this bibliography, unless they contain significantly new and/or substantial information about the Duke or Duchess of Windsor. Anthological historical books about the British monarchy or other historical subject matter (murder, true crime) are also omitted from this bibliography.
- The Film category currently includes only documentaries or television or theatrical films which deal significantly with the Windsors. We will in the very near future create an additional category for filmed interviews of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. There have also been a number of theatrical musicals and plays written about the Windsors. We will also expand on this category in the near future.
Please submit additional recommendations for inclusion in the bibliography to: webiblio@gmail.com or webiblio@ddows.org. The more info about the submission the better. Edghill recommends that a submission look something like:
“Why He Married That Woman” by I.M. Jealous, SLEAZE Magazine, January 1937 as opposed to a more obscure version: “‘Why He Married That Woman’ an article in an old magazine I sort of remember.”
